First Sunday of the University year, and starting a preaching series on the Book of Revelation. We started with 'In Christ Alone' to welcome any newcomers with a familiar song and some central Gospel truths.

I've been thinking a lot about how to keep a consciousness of God's holiness even as we celebrate grace. the final verse of 'Come, let us worship Jesus' is a powerful recognition:

Fear God and give him glory
For his hour of judgement comes
Creator, Lord Almighty
Worship him alone

The segue into 'This is amazing grace' worked well.

As usual on this Sunday, we added a song before the sermon. 'We come to hear your word' is settling in well now. I'm excited about how useful an album Songs for Sundays is proving.

Revelation might be a difficult book to understand, but it's just full of songs: actual songs in the text, and countless songs written from the text. An embarrassment of riches for a worship leader. Both response songs this morning took on powerful new resonance as they echoed images and phrases from chapter 1.
