A high pressure season and a busy weekend, so I didn't feel totally prepared as I stood up to lead this morning. But I've learned in these times to simply throw myself onto God, and that's usually leadership enough.

'Only a Holy God' has bedded in very well. (Check it out if you don't use it!) And we're now working on 'O Come to the Altar'

I was conscious that the line "O come to the altar" might be confusing for folk, particularly leading to communion. Which altar? So after lots of fantastic spoken contributions beforehand, I pointed people to Hebrews 13 where it's clear that the altar is Christ. His body is the place where right sacrifice was made, where we are atoned, where even the Levitical priests couldn't approach, but where we find endless welcome. The song is a powerful invitation.

My voice was failing a bit around communion, but I was glad to have the congregation's voice lift those familiar and faithful songs.

Ruth preached powerfully from Daniel 10 and 11. It's a shame we were already running behind, so could only respond to her call to prayer with one song. 'Always' was spot on, though.

Next stop: Carol Services!
