James was speaking on 'Simplicity' as part of our series on 'Spiritual Disciplines' tonight, so I thought we'd start with a kids' song. See www.butterflysong.com for more details, although I'm sure you know it! It was a bit of a risk: if it had come across that I was trying to be ironic I would have misfired the whole meeting. Sunday worship is the very opposite of ironic cool. Cool operates by excluding people: Christian worship is fundamentally an invitation to anyone. But it was received in exactly the light-hearted exam-antidote tone I intended it, and really opened things up well for the rest of the evening.

I taught a new song I've written this evening: I waited for the Lord, a meditation on Psalm 40. I think the song is perhaps only half way there (it needs a second verse), but I really felt it was right to sing it tonight. I had people sit down, and properly taught the song midway through the set, which was another risk, but again it seemed to connect, and led well into Jesus, all for Jesus after which lots of people led us all in prayers of devotion and trust.

An exhausting day, but so worthwhile!
