In My Distress
Lyrics
Lord, I come in my distress
Can you bear my brokenness?
Will you keep your promises?
Do you care?
I have sung of your great love
I have trusted in the cross
Is my faith not strong enough?
Do you care?
Does your faithfulness remain?
Is there meaning in this pain?
Are you still the God who saves?
Are you there?
I still fall before your throne
I still call your name alone
I've got nowhere else to go
Do you care?
Does your faithfulness remain?
Is there meaning in this pain?
Are you still the God who saves?
Are you there?
Are there limits to your grace?
Is there hope beyond the grave?
Can the dead rise up again?
Are you there?
Are you there, O Lord?

Story
A lament, written after a friend died. Pretty much the only song I wrote during two desolate years when I lost my voice. Every promise and consolation felt bitter in my mouth, and yet - like Peter in John 6 - where else could I go? I brought the dissonance to God. I joined the Psalmists asking "How long?" as an expression of desperate worship.
