An action worship Sunday. I wasn't quite as on top of introducing things as usual, but it all went well. There was a tangible worshipping lift as we sang the chorus of 'God Is Love'.

Guest Speaker Pete Dray shared from Isaiah 61 so it was almost a no-brainer where to begin the response. 'The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord' essentially sings off the page of that chapter.

Every time we use that song, someone asks me whether it's right to sing the line "This is the day of the vengeance of our God". I'm sympathetic to the query. Although the phrase is straight from Isaiah 61, Luke 4 doesn't include it, which gives me pause about singing it. But in the end I don't think it's possible to differentiate 'the year' and 'the day' in Isaiah 61. They're both being used in something like the way we say 'the time' or 'the hour' in contemporary English. The day/year/hour/time in question is God's judgement against evil - expressed in Jesus casting out demons, and the overthrow of injustice in his kingdom. Everything in Isaiah 61 speaks of the kingdom. A kingdom that we both experience now and also await in it's ultimate fullness.
