A big first meeting of the new academic year. Getting on for 400 people in the room, and full of life.

We have lots of new students looking for a church on this Sunday every year. I always like to settle the nerves with a big opening song that tells the story of salvation. 'In Christ alone' is one of the few contemporary songs that fits the bill.

Over the course of the first block I made explicit what always underpins our gathered worship: that we worship the Father with confidence because of the cross of Christ and in the power of the Spirit; that our only hope is Christ, that his grace is our salvation, and that our hope will last forever.

The band ranged from a huge sound for 'Here for you' through to almost silent for most of 'Adoration'. I'm convinced that both the awe-inspiring noise of the band (hopefully!) and the simple a cappella of the congregation's voices equally speak of what it means to worship together.

Mark launched our new sermon series on the book of Ephesians with a powerful exploration of Eph 1:1-14. We looked at God's big purposes in history and our predestined part in it. 'Our God Saves' was a good response, and I left us back confessing our need of Christ with my 'I Cling to the Cross'.

A good start.
